Visa requirements

Groceries such as rice, pasta, and canned foods are relatively cheap, while fresh fruits and vegetables vary in price depending on the season. A basic grocery list can cost around $50-$100 per month for a single expat.

Transportation

Transportation expenses for expats include the cost of travel on matatus and bodas, as well as car rental fees. A standard matatu ticket costs approximately $0.50, while a boda ride costs around $1.50 for short distances. Car hire can cost around $20-$40 per day, depending on the model and duration of rental.

Matatus (14-seater minibuses) are a popular and affordable mode of transportation, with routes connecting major areas in the city. Motorcycles, known as bodas, are also widely used, particularly for shorter distances.

While Gulu is relatively safe, some areas should be avoided due to high crime rates.
